With walleye season opener days away many people have their sights on the Kiwanis Walleye World Tournament. The tournament starts May 4th at 12:00 am, attracting anglers from all over the province. With thousands of boats literally everywhere on the Bay of Quinte looking for that ‘trophy’ to bring to the podium, everyone is looking for something to give them an edge.
This year I tried local suppliers to get my edge. While other anglers are making their way to the big box stores, I find it better to visit local businesses that not only specialize but have staff with personal experience. This year at the top of my list is Pro Tackle Musky Shop and Presqu’ile Bay Outfitters.
I have heard that pre season isn’t complete without a visit to Pro Tackle Musky Shop at 43B Putnam Industrial Drive in Belleville. Bay of Quinte Region local retailer, Stacy Ash specializes in bait and tackle specific to the area. His selection offers some items I have never successfully found at large retailers. This year I am excited to try some crank baits, which I purchased from Stacy at his charity barbecue and sale last week. Hopefully I will be back to Pro Tackle Musky Shop before the season opener to pick up my pre ordered, custom tackle box. I think this may be one more of many trips I will make there this year.
Next stop on my list to try was Presqu’ile Bay Outfitters at 180 Baldwin St. in Brighton. I have never ventured out their way, but they have been popping up frequently on my social networks, so I thought I would make the drive. When I arrived, the power on the street had been out for almost a day, but I was still welcomed. Sean Sheppard took the time to walk me through the entire store. He shared tactics with me that people have used to win the Kiwanis Walleye World tournament in the past. I will have to visit again soon with my kids, since they also have a fabulous selection of ice cream.
I hope that anyone visiting the area for opening walleye weekend will take the time to visit the local tackle shops. You will have the opportunity to gain local knowledge and get treated like you are an old friend.
During the pre season this year I have met some really friendly and knowledgeable people around the Bay of Quinte Region. I hope that anyone visiting the area for opening walleye weekend will take the time to visit the local tackle shops all over the Bay of Quinte Region. You will have the opportunity to gain local knowledge and get treated like you are an old friend.
Now that I feel confident in my gear, I am eager to get out on the open water and catch myself a ‘trophy’.
